Survive and Live: Language Integration of Young Refugees

Objectives

The main objective of the Survive and Live project is to develop the oral language skills of young refugees to an A1 level in Greek, focusing on everyday communication.
The project also aims to:

  • Deliver 35 hours of targeted instruction to improve speaking and listening skills for daily interactions.
  • Create an innovative teaching method for oral language production and comprehension in Greek, designed for illiterate or low-literacy beginners.
  • Train teachers in effective instruction methods for heterogeneous refugee classes, using a collaborative co-teaching approach.

Target Groups

  • Primary Target Group: Young refugees in the host countries who need to integrate into the workforce and society quickly. The project supports them in building basic communication skills in Greek to navigate daily life and foster social connections.

This group is already involved with the partner organisations, which collaborate with NGOs (e.g., Hope for Children, Home Project, Greek Council for Refugees) and offer Greek language education both in-person and online.

  • Secondary Target Groups:

– Educators and institutions already teaching Greek to refugee and migrant populations who will benefit from the materials and co-teaching methodology.

– Organizations involved in refugee support who will expand their networks and teaching practices.

– Students with learning difficulties, especially illiterate learners, who require adapted teaching methods to learn Greek effectively.

– Newly arrived economic migrants in Greece and Cyprus who also face language barriers.

– Other Greek language schools and educators interested in using the open-access materials, which emphasise practical vocabulary, real-life scenarios, and oral language development.

Expected Results

  • A set of lesson plans and a teaching methodology specifically designed for young refugees.
  • An online learning platform offering free access to the educational materials.
  • Teacher training in the co-teaching approach for refugee education.
  • Language and cultural education resources that help young refugees integrate socially and culturally into their host communities.
